What Are You Grateful For?

In these times of natural and man-made disasters, it is easy to fall victim to severe sadness, depression, and anxiety. Yet, it is hard to find a place of gratitude. Is there any happiness in the world? Will we just be healing ourselves now only to find more sadness just around the corner? 

 

Our thoughts can go on and on about how things won't get better. But even in tragedy, there is always something to be grateful for. After both Hurricane Irma and Harvey, there is a glimmer of hope as people continue to come together to rebuild. With the recent shooting in Las Vegas, you see the love for those who were lost. Although life can be painful, there is always something to be grateful for. 

 

Whether feeling hopeless or simply sad, there is something that may help you. Writing your thoughts down in a journal can be a good exercise to center yourself and can be therapy for your soul. It is a way to reflect on your life and your journey. More specifically, writing down at least 5 things you are grateful for each day can also enhance your life experiences in a better way. It is easy to find negative things happening all around you. Intentionally looking for the good things that you are grateful for can take more energy, but can give you a more helpful and hopeful spirit.

 

The first time I was asked to do this exercise it took a few minutes for me to figure out what I was truly grateful for. Most people would say that they are grateful for their friends and family. I know these where the first items on my list. But I was asked to push even further to look for the less obvious answers. For me, I began to find that I was grateful to hear birds tweet outside my window in the morning to wake me up. The birds would remind me to live without limits and keep flying. So just like I was told to push past the obvious, 

 

I ask you to do the same. Stretch yourself to find what you are grateful for. 

 

Can you think of 5 things you are most grateful for? When you do, write them down and even consider sharing them. Try to do this every day or as often as you can. You'll find that your attitude will turn to one of gratitude.
